Overview
Estimated time: 2.5 hours
Language: Spanish
Date: 2026
Format: online, self-paced
Code: RGNPVG2001
Intended for: professionals, students, technicians and companies in the agricultural sector interested in integrating cover crops as a strategic component of farm planning.
Description:
This course provides tools for the analysis and strategic selection of cover crops in crop and mixed crop-livestock systems. It explores the main agronomic goals these crops can serve —erosion control, improved soil structure, biomass input, nutrient cycling, winter cover and weed suppression— highlighting both their benefits and their limitations in each production context. Through case studies and real situations, participants will acquire technical criteria to define implementation goals adapted to specific soil conditions, water regimes, rotation sequences and production targets. With a focus on well-founded decision-making, the course promotes efficient use of resources and system sustainability.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Analyze the technical criteria for selecting cover crop species.
- Define basic management strategies (fertilization, aerial seeding and termination timing) according to production goals.
- Assess the impact of cover crops on the yield of the following crop and their contribution to integrated crop-livestock systems.
- Interpret the effects of the sustained use of cover crops on long-term agronomic and environmental variables (soil, fertility, system stability).
Contents:
- Cover crop management
- Species selection
- Fertilizing cover crops
- Aerial seeding management
- Choosing the termination timing and its effect on yield
